The CRHR1 gene encodes a receptor for CRH, the first hormone of the HPA axis. Stress activates the HPA axis, resulting in cortisol release. Hence, CRH receptors play a significant role in stress response and related disorders [RR].

CRH release causes fear and anxiety via the CRHR1 receptor [RR]. 

People with PTSD tend to have excess CRH activity and dysfunctional HPA axis [RR].
